The 82nd Golden Globes did not disappoint. Held on January 5 at the famed Beverly Hilton Hotel in Los Angeles, the annual award ceremony saw several game-changing firsts.
Comedian Nikki Glaser made history as the first solo female host of the Golden Globes, delighting the audience with a biting monologue that didn’t shy away from roasting some of the night’s biggest celebrities (i.e. Timothée Chalamet and his mustache). Karla Sofía Gascón was the first transgender actress to be nominated in the Best Actress in a Musical or Comedy category for her role in Emilia Pérez, representing a monumental moment in the ceremony’s history. Demi Moore took home her first-ever Golden Globe win for her leading role in the body horror film, “The Substance.”
Meanwhile, Netflix’s Emilia Pérez won Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy and Best Non-English Film, with the musical’s supporting actress Zoe Saldaña taking home a Golden Globe for her performance. Adrien Brody won his first Globe for his starring role in A24’s epic immigrant drama The Brutalist, which won Best Motion Picture – Drama. The Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo-starrer Wicked won the award for Cinematic and Box Office Achievement. Ali Wong, Anna Sawai, Hiroyuki Sanada, Kieran Culkin, Colin Farrell, and Jeremy Allen White were among the individual winners of the night.
Two days prior to the ceremony, at the Globes’ inaugural Golden Gala, Viola Davis and Ted Danson were both honored with lifetime achievement awards. Davis was awarded the Cecil B. DeMille Award, while Danson accepted the Carol Burnett Award, a testament to their decades-long contributions to film and television. The special ceremony was attended by several of Hollywood’s brightest stars, including Meryl Streep, Jane Fonda, and Carol Burnett, among others.
