At the inaugural Rolling Stone Philippines Hall of Fame on Thursday, November 20, Mike Hanopol’s band Hanopology brought the evening to a fiery close with a set of Filipino rock n’ roll classics, sharing the stage at the Peninsula Manila with other OPM mainstays, such as Sandwich’s Raimund Marasigan, and Red dela Peña of P.O.T.
Hanopol is among the Hall of Fame’s first inductees, receiving the honor on behalf of pioneering rock n’ roll band Juan Dela Cruz and his late bandmates, which include rock legends Pepe Smith and Wally Gonzalez. Their sons Beebop Smith and John Gonzalez also joined Hanopol onstage.
Juan Dela Cruz debuted as a five-piece band in 1971 with the album Up in Arms, and followed it with Himig Natin in 1973, greatly influencing the sound of Filipino rock in the next decades with hits that Hanopol brought to the Hall of Fame stage.
The closing performance started with Hanopol’s 1993 song “Sa Bayan ni Juan.” Hanopology, Marasigan, and dela Peña went on to take guests to the 1970s with Juan Dela Cruz hits such as “Project,” “Balong Malalim,” “Kahit Anong Mangyari,” “Himig Natin,” and Filipino karaoke staple “Beep Beep.” For the encore, they performed Hanopol’s headbanger “Laki sa Layaw.”
