Although the Internet has jumped to conclusions after the release of an alleged leaked teaser, Cap’s return might not be so cut and dry

Marvel, as usual, has kept tight-lipped about its upcoming blockbuster, Avengers: Doomsday, which is set to reunite a roster of heroes from across the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). However, what seems to be a leaked teaser has begun circulating online, throwing fans into a frenzy over its major spoiler: the alleged return of Chris Evans.

While the minute-long footage appears to have Evans back in the MCU as Steve Rogers, holding a baby to boot, neither Marvel Studios nor Evans has confirmed the actor’s involvement in the latest addition to the franchise.

Evans’ last movie as Captain America was 2019’s Avengers: Endgame, the seventh of his seven contractually obligated performances as the superhero. In a 2023 interview with GQ, Evans spoke of his initial reluctance to even take on the role. “I was really apprehensive,” said Evans. “I remember in my late 20s having a real shift in how I felt on set, how I felt promoting films: a little more anxiety, a little more uncertainty. You always end up questioning, Is this what I should be doing?”

In that same interview, Evans noted that he would be open to returning to the MCU, but that he was also in no hurry and that it would have to be for a good reason. “I’ll never say never, just because it was such a wonderful experience,” he said. “But I’m also very precious with it. It’s something that I am very proud of. And like I said, sometimes I can’t believe it even happened. And I wouldn’t want the black eye if it felt like a cash grab or if it didn’t live up to expectations or if it just felt like it wasn’t connected to that original thing. So, no time soon.”

Marvel has, however, confirmed multiple actors to appear in Avengers: Doomsday, including Chris Hemsworth (Thor), Anthony Mackie (Captain America), Vanessa Kirby (Susan Storm), Paul Rudd (Ant-Man), and Florence Pugh (Yelena). Robert Downey Jr. will also be making a return, but as Victor Von Doom, a.k.a. Doctor Doom.

The film is part of Phase Six of the MCU, which began with this year’s The Fantastic Four: The First Steps. Anthony and Joe Russo (Avengers: Infinity War, Avengers: Endgame) will be back to helm Doomsday
