Nearly four years after the 2022 presidential elections and two years before the 2028 elections, Filipinos are still fighting over who should lead the country. Duterte supporters are keen to oust President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr., and others — albeit jokingly — clamor for Nadine Lustre as a leader. But the actress and environmental advocate says she’s ready to support Naga Mayor Leni Robredo if she decides to run for president again.
On Tuesday, February 10, Lustre visited the office of Congresswoman Leila de Lima at the House of Representatives in Quezon City to join her in filing two bills.
When asked if Robredo should run for president in 2028, Lustre answered, “Definitely.”
“She’s really the best candidate for the presidency, and I supported her way, way back, when she ran the first time,” she said. The actress added that whether Robredo runs for president again is still her decision. “Sometimes, the best presidents are those who don’t want to run.”
De Lima added, “We’re not losing hope na magbabago pa ang desisyon ni [former Vice President] Leni na tumakbo uli sa 2028, because for me, she’s the most winnable among the possible or potential opposition candidates.”
Robredo lost to Marcos in the 2022 presidential race, garnering around 15 million votes while her opponent earned around 31 million.
Lustre joined de Lima in support of a bill proposing the establishment of the Animal Welfare Ombudsman Unit under the Philippine National Police to oversee the implementation of animal welfare laws and establish animal welfare desks in police stations.
The other bill proposes a plant-based health advocacy program that promotes native vegetables. Part of the program would include implementing Halaman Mondays in government offices, hospitals, and public schools, requiring them to offer plant-based meals.
