May is almost upon us, bringing with it a fresh batch of movies to watch that are all worth the trip to your local cinema.
However, it can be a little daunting figuring out which feature deserves the movie ticket (and which one to sit out on). To help you decide your movie marathon plans, we’ve put together a quick list of films coming to Philippine cinemas nationwide this month.
‘Mortal Kombat II’ (May 6)
Get ready for punches, kicks, and blood galore as the highly anticipated sequel to Mortal Kombat jumps into cinemas. Keeping familiar faces like Cole Young (Lewis Tan) and Sonya Blade (Jessica McNamee), Mortal Kombat II also brings new champions like Johnny Cage (Karl Urban), Kitana (Adeline Rudolph), and Jade (Tati Gabrielle) to go up against the Earthrealm’s biggest villain, Shao Kahn (Martyn Ford).
‘The Sheep Detectives’ (May 6)
Bear with me now, because the plot of director Kyle Balda’s sheepish-who-dunnit gets a little strange. It centers around George (Hugh Jackman), a shepherd whose hobby is reading detective stories to his flock of sheep (several of whom are voiced by Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Regina Hall, and Bryan Cranston). When George is mysteriously murdered, the sheep must band together to solve the crime.
‘Billie Eilish – Hit Me Hard And Soft: The Tour (Live in 3D)’ (May 8)
A Billie Eilish concert film directed by the pop star herself and James Cameron? It may sound like an unlikely collab, but that’s exactly what’s happened with Billie Eilish — Hit Me Hard and Soft. Presented in immersive 3D, the film will be screened exclusively at select SM Cinemas nationwide.
“He really treated me like his equal,” Eilish told Rolling Stone about her time working with the Academy Award-winning director. “Just love the idea of people who didn’t get to see the show getting to experience it like they were there … The goal of shooting this movie is to really capture this incredible bond that I share.”
‘Midnight Girls’ (May 13)
Midnight Girls, the latest from acclaimed director Irene Villamor, follows four Filipina entertainers trying to balance life working in Nagoya, Japan, and the emotional cost that comes with being so far away from home. The drama stars Jodi Sta. Maria, Loisa Andalio, Jane Oineza, and Sanya Lopez.
‘Top Gun’ and ‘Top Gun: Maverick’ (May 13)
For one week only, Top Gun and Top Gun: Maverick will screen exclusively at select SM Cinema branches to celebrate the first film’s 40th anniversary. Both action blockbusters follow hotshot fighter pilot Maverick (Tom Cruise) and his time being trained, and then training, at the Top Gun Naval Fighter Weapons School.
‘Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu’ (May 20)
The Empire has fallen, and the fledgling New Republic must work together to protect everything their Rebellion has fought for. To do this, they enlist the help of the legendary Mandalorian bounty hunter Din Djarin (Pedro Pascal) and his young apprentice, Grogu.
‘Passenger’ (May 27)
Nothing good can come from driving late at night on a highway. In Passenger, the latest horror from director André Øvredal (The Autopsy of Jane Doe, The Last Voyage of the Demeter), a young couple bear witness to a gruesome highway accident. Unfortunately, they soon realize that they did not leave the crash site alone.
‘Obsession’ (May 27)
The things people do for love. In director Curry Baker’s horror flick Obsession, Bear (Michael Johnston) decides to wish on an enchanted stick (ala Weapons) for his crush Nikki (Inde Navarette) to love him. Bear finds himself getting exactly what he wished for, and then some.
