Pop heavyweight Taylor Swift and football star Travis Kelce tied the knot this weekend in a lavish but private ceremony. As more details emerge from the celebration, held on July 3, fans and critics alike sound out their thoughts, and some of them aren’t so savory.
The last time a billionaire’s wedding got called “tacky” was when Amazon founder Jeff Bezos got hitched to former journalist Lauren Sánchez in a days-long celebration in Venice in June 2025. Swift faces the same kind of criticism now, even though, unlike Bezos, she’s armed with millions of adoring fans.
Fortunately, there was something for the Swifties, even as sections of roads around Madison Square Garden (MSG) — the arena where the newlyweds exchanged lengthy vows — were cordoned off on the days leading up to the wedding. With the tight security, a strict no-phones rule, and the painful lack of photos of the ceremony and reception (we don’t even know what the dress looks like), there was a sense that this wedding was going to be a totally private affair.
It’s definitely not as accessible as the recent wedding of Dua Lipa and Callum Turner, which included a pre-wedding cocktail party that the public could still watch from the outside and ceremony photos published in Vogue — though if I had a gorgeous three-day wedding celebration in Palermo, I’d be showing it off too (Lipa and Turner were also in attendance at the MSG wedding).
And yet so much of the Swift-Kelce wedding is also public-facing: 1,000 guests, some of them pap-walking to and from the venue, LED signs proclaiming that the couple has been “JUST&T MARRIED” (I think they could have gotten a Filipino wedding planner to think of a smoother, punnier tagline), and the catering team handing out boxes of reportedly leftover dessert to fans waiting at the barricade.
Who Were the Controversial Guests at The Wedding?
Swift cannot escape from her tendency to self-mythologize and brand everything she does. Party favors included a handkerchief with a custom logo for the wedding, which I thought was cute! But embroidered in the fabric was the line “So it’s gonna be forever…” from her 2013 hit “Blank Space.” The ellipsis is a funny addition, considering that the next line in the song is “or it’s gonna go down in flames.” Let’s all knock on wood.
She also reportedly walked down the aisle to a string arrangement of one of her own songs — and honestly, why wouldn’t she? We’re open to guesses; my money’s on “Love Story,” obvi.
Then there’s the matter of the guest list. Last year, she told Graham Norton that “anyone that I’ve ever talked to” is invited and that she didn’t want to take on the arduous task of editing the guest list down. But writer Zadie Smith is a head-scratcher, and Karlie Kloss’ attendance is fuel for the Gaylors.
Some fans were enraged by the attendance of Steve J. Demetriou, the CEO of government contractor Amentum. Earlier in the year, the company became a contractor for the Camp East Montana ICE detention center, the U.S.’ largest detention center. Demetriou is also the father of Ohio Republican Representative Steve Demetriou and the adopted father of Kelce’s childhood friend, Reggie King (not to be confused with the basketball player of the same name).
We still don’t know enough about what actually went on inside MSG, so it’s injudicious to conclude that the wedding, as a whole, was tacky.
But here are some other details that made me wince or laugh: chicken nuggets topped with caviar for the hors d’oeuvres, what AMC Theaters CEO Adam Aron described as “large blown-up pictures of Taylor and Travis at each age, year by year” hung around the arena, Adam Sandler as the officiant, and Lena Dunham’s speech, where she reportedly said, “American football is just straight guys reenacting gay porn.” While the remark might have offended some guests, Swift called the Girls creator a “genius.”
