Filmmaker David Lowery’s psychological drama Mother Mary dropped its first trailer on December 4. Anne Hathaway plays the title character, a global pop music headliner preparing for a high-stakes comeback performance. The trailer sets the stage for her reunion with Sam Anselm, an estranged best friend and former costume designer played by Michaela Coel. Hunter Schafer and FKA Twigs also appear in supporting roles, with Twigs and Charli XCX providing original music for the film.
The trailer shows Hathaway’s character navigating prayer circles, backstage visions and a concert that feels moments away from collapse. Her character takes on a striking look that shifts between glamour and anxiety, wearing a glittered bodysuit, white-blonde hair and a halo-shaped headdress. The project presents itself with the line, “This is not a love story. This is a prayer,” signaling a drama built on devotion, manipulation and the pressure placed on pop icons who spend their careers performing clarity while spiraling behind the curtain.
Mother Mary places Lowery once again in familiar territory. His filmography moves from the medieval fantasy of The Green Knight to the metaphoric grief of A Ghost Story, plus Disney projects like Pete’s Dragon and Peter Pan & Wendy. His shift toward a pop-world thriller paired with original songs from Charli and Twigs suggests a film that leans hard into spectacle and personal ruin.
Mother Mary is slated for release in Spring 2026.
