The Mushroom Kingdom is heading to space, and the cast list for The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is a gamer’s fever dream. Nintendo and Illumination have unveiled the latest lineup for the sequel to 2023’s blockbuster The Super Mario Bros. Movie on March 9, and the new voices joining the adventure continue the franchise’s streak of surprising casting choices across gaming and film circles. Actor and musician Donald Glover is officially stepping into the role of Yoshi, the big-eyed green dinosaur who has been one of Mario’s most beloved companions since 1990 (and only appeared as a cameo in the previous film). Meanwhile, The Smashing Machine director and Oppenheimer actor Benny Safdie will voice Bowser Jr., bringing the chaotic heir to the Koopa throne into the animated spotlight. Actress and producer Issa Rae also joins the cosmic lineup as Honey Queen, the regal ruler from the Honeyhive Galaxy, adding another unexpected name to the film’s ensemble.
The sequel brings back the voices of the first film. Chris Pratt, Charlie Day, and Anya Taylor-Joy, returning as Mario, Luigi, and Princess Peach, respectively. The film follows the crew as they leave the Mushroom Kingdom behind and travel across new planets, encountering fresh allies and enemies along the way.
With a cast that blends Hollywood heavyweights and gaming nostalgia, the galaxy just got a lot louder.
