Wicked: For Good is having a very good opening weekend in the Philippines.

The highly anticipated sequel earned P163.5 million in its five-day opening weekend box office. This is 54% higher than what its predecessor, Wicked, earned during its opening weekend here last year. The Philippines also currently ranks as the sixth-highest international market outside of the United States in terms of sales.

“We’re not the biggest market in the world, but we’re quite known for our musically inclined audience,” Rico Gonzales, the Director of Distribution at Warner Bros. Pictures Philippines, told Rolling Stone Philippines. Warner Bros. Pictures also releases films from Universal Pictures. Gonzales went on to note that on November 24, the sixth day after Wicked: For Good released in cinemas nationwide, total sales had almost reached P174 million. This is Universal Pictures Philippines’ best performing opening weekend since 2018, when Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom brought in roughly P213 million in sales.

“Overall, [Wicked: For Good] is the fourth biggest opening weekend for Universal Pictures [Philippines] of all time,” said Gonzales. “And parang unheard of yan sa mga musical movies before… usually it’s Jurassic World, or Minions, kasi established franchises na yan.”

When asked what the target amount had been for Wicked: For Good’s opening weekend, Gonzales stated that Universal Pictures Philippines had hit 25% higher than its original target. As the movie enters its second opening weekend, Gonzales said that the new target is to surpass P300 million. “It will likely reach [this amount],” he said. “Last year, Wicked’s second weekend reached [more than] P330 million.”
