Wuthering Heights has hit Philippine cinemas, bringing with it a cast of characters getting hot and heavy against the backdrop of a Gothic romance.
For the uninitiated, Wuthering Heights centers around the doomed romance between Catherine Earnshaw (Margot Robbie) and Heathcliff (Jacob Elordi), two adopted siblings who grow up to become forbidden lovers.
Things quickly get steamy in director Emerald Fennell’s adaptation of the classic Brontë novel, and it can get a little confusing keeping track of who’s who in the Gothic romance. To that end, we’ve compiled a simple character guide to help you recognize everyone in this latest version of Wuthering Heights.
Catherine “Cathy” Earnshaw (Margot Robbie)
Bratty, emotional, and gorgeous, Catherine Earnshaw is the impoverished daughter of a ruined Yorkshire lord. Catherine only cares about two things in life: escaping poverty and her adoptive brother Heathcliff, whom she slowly starts to develop intense, complex, and lust-fuelled feelings for as they grow up together. The only problem is that she’s accepted a marriage proposal from the wealthy Edgar Linton.
Heathcliff (Jacob Elordi)
Wuthering Heights begins with Catherine’s father, Mr. Earnshaw, plucking an orphan off the streets and bringing him to the titular decrepit manor. Catherine immediately takes a liking to the terrified boy, naming him Heathcliff (after her own deceased brother) and deeming him her “pet.” Read into that what you will, but Heathcliff goes on to dedicate his whole life to loving, tormenting, and ruining his adoptive sister.
Nelly (Hong Chau)
Although Nelly may relegate herself to the background, she is Wuthering Heights’ sharpest and most calculating character. As Catherine’s discontented caretaker, Nelly has been keeping Catherine out of trouble since the two of them were children running around the manor. However, Nelly doesn’t always know better, and she makes a number of questionable choices that set off the story’s tragedy.
Edgar Linton (Shazad Latif)
Edgar Linton made his vast fortune in textiles, and when he moved into the lot nearest Wuthering Heights, Catherine began to spend all her time devising a plot to make his acquaintance. Kind and unfailingly loyal, Edgar quickly falls for his beautiful neighbor and makes her an offer she can’t refuse.
Isabella Linton (Alison Oliver)
As Edgar’s ward, Isabella lives a lush, sheltered life behind the walls of his manor, Thrushcross Grange. She has very little to do and spends most of her days adding to her collection of hair ribbons and playing with her teeny, tiny Pomeranian. However, things take a turn when Heathcliff awakens something primal in her.
