eGilas has once again missed out on the bronze medal in the eFIBA World Finals.
For the uninitiated, eFIBA is “the official esports basketball competition organized by the International Basketball Federation,” according to its official website. National basketball federations across the globe gather at a chosen host country and compete for the World Championship title. Teams play on the NBA 2K video game, with each match following a 5v5 format in PRO-AM mode, which is a game mode where players can create a custom team and play together online.
Now in its third season, eFIBA was held on Thursday, December 12 at the SMX Convention Center in Clark, Pampanga. The eGilas team was composed of Kenneth “Clue” Gutierrez, Lynard “ZavaLCB” Banzon, Julian “Social” Mallillin, Isaiah “Ice2Fast” Alindada, and Prich “DonPriich” Diez.
Initially, eGilas showed great potential, winning against fierce competition like New Zealand and Turkey, the latter of which had beaten eGilas during last year’s bronze-medal match-up. However, Brazil gave eGilas their first loss (0-2), pitting them against Team USA, which proceeded to dominate eGilas and dispatch them with a 2-0 win.
In their final match, eGilas lost to Portugal in the bronze medal match, scoring a heartbreaking 2-1 loss. This marks the second consecutive year that the country’s national esports team has scored fourth place in the eFIBA World Finals.
