Despite her filmography of award-winning dramas (Itim, Kisapmata, Ang Babaeng Humayo, for example), Charo Santos-Concio loves a good rom-com.
“Sabi ko, ‘Ay, talagang pang-romansa pala ako,” said the acclaimed actress and former CEO of ABS-CBN Corporation with a laugh in the latest episode of Rolling Stone Philippines Greatest Hits. “Diba kilig brings relief? Falling in love, discovering love, discovering the beauty of another person brings kilig. And it’s good to feel good.”
She added, “Ayan na, nakikita na nilang, ‘Ay, kaya naman pala ang daming Star Cinema movies na romantic comedy!’”
Her most recent cinematic project was the rom-com Only We Know, where she plays retired teacher and divorcee Betty, who forms an unexpected bond with her younger neighbor, the newly widowed Ryan (Dingdong Dantes).
“Only We Know was pitched to me in 2018,” said Santos-Concio. “Nag-pandemic, nagsara ang ABS-CBN, ang dami kong dinaanan. I lost my husband. When I finally got to sit down and start working on the film, I was a different person from who I was when I accepted the project.”
Despite these challenges, however, she felt that her experiences helped her approach the film with deeper insight and a greater appreciation for her character. “Betty is a reflection of who I am now,” said the actress. “Retired, living a quiet life, independent, confident, and knows what she wants, but is still enjoying her life and embracing what life has to offer.”
