On November 4, Filipino-American electronic producer underscores released a new single titled “Do It,” accompanied by a music video that doubles as a tongue-in-cheek tribute to second-generation K-pop.
The video features underscores performing choreographed routines against glitzy, bitpop-inspired synths while, on a laptop, a group of extras scroll through an online survey on pigeonholing artists by genre. “Do It” follows “Music,” another self-referential track that saw the producer dancing across chaotic Dance Dance Revolution-style sequences while flashing song titles and genre names across the screen. Together, these releases showcase underscores’ fascination with performance, irony, and the blurred lines between art and audience.
Since debuting with the album Fishmonger in 2021, underscores has built a sound that bridges alternative rock’s emotional core with the tactile textures of ambient and electronic production. Their 2023 concept album Wallsocket expanded that vision, framing stories of disillusionment and suburban angst within a fictional Midwestern town. The record cemented underscores as one of the most inventive voices in today’s experimental pop landscape. They have also collaborated with electronic artists and rappers such as Umru, Oklou, and Danny Brown.
In April, underscores joined Eyedress and beabadoobee as one of the few Filipino artists to perform at Coachella, marking another step in their evolution from internet phenomenon to festival-stage mainstay.
