Fleetwood Mac’s Comeback Looks Imminent, But We’ve Been Hurt Before

It’s uncertain what Fleetwood Mac’s ex-lovebirds Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham are teasing at as they post lyrics to a song off their old duo project

In the wake of Chris Martin outing an office scandal during a Coldplay concert, another legendary workplace romance seems to be writing its latest chapter. On Thursday evening, Fleetwood Mac vocalists Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham posted lyrics on their social media pages, sparking rumors of a reunion.

“And if you go forward…” says Nick’s post. “I’ll meet you there,” Buckingham’s post answers.

The lines belong to the song “Frozen Love” off their joint project Buckingham Nicks, released a year before the couple joined Fleetwood Mac. Buckingham and Nicks had maintained a romantic relationship until their break-up in 1977, which inspired hits like “Silver Springs”, “Dreams”, and “Go Your Own Way”.

A day prior to the social media posts, band leader Mick Fleetwood also posted a video listening and reacting to “Frozen Love”.

“Unbelievable,” he said. “The marriage of [Nicks and Buckingham] coming into Fleetwood Mac when they did, it’s all in the song. It’s in the music that played on for so many years. It’s magic then, magic now. What a thrill.” Fleetwood had discovered the two after listening to the album and invited them to join the band in 1974.

So is a Fleetwood Mac reunion happening? In 2023, Nicks said that the chances of the band coming back together were low, especially after the death of keyboardist Christine McVie in 2022. “Who am I going to look over to on the right and have them not be there behind that Hammond organ?” she told Vulture. “When she died, I figured we really can’t go any further with this. There’s no reason to.”

In 2024, Fleetwood told MOJO that he’d still like the band to come together. “Stevie’s able to speak clearly about how she feels and doesn’t feel, as does Lindsey,” he said. “But I’ll say, personally, I would love to see a healing between them — and that doesn’t have to take the shape of a tour, necessarily.”

Fleetwood Mac’s surviving members are Fleetwood, Nicks, Buckingham, guitarists Mike Campbell and Neil Finn, and bassist John McVie, Christine’s brother and a founding member of the band.
