Ethan Hawke is back as the Grabber in Black Phone 2. This is the highly anticipated follow-up to the 2021 horror film The Black Phone, which saw Hawke’s Grabber abducting small children and trapping them in his soundproof basement. When Finney (Mason Thames) finds himself facing the same fate, the basement’s lone phone begins to ring, allowing him to speak with the Grabber’s past victims.
While little is known about Black Phone 2’s storyline, its latest trailer drops a few telling hints. In a series of jarring, grainy clips, we see the familiar dingy basement, children eerily playing in the snow, and the phone ringing once again. What’s more, it appears as if Finney is back in the Grabber’s clutches. Standing alone in a glass telephone booth in the middle of a dark, snowy landscape, Finney answers the phone once again, seemingly reeling from the trauma of his past experience, while the Grabber’s white demon mask presses firmly against the glass.
It’s no surprise that The Black Phone is getting this sequel, given that it grossed over $150 million worldwide. With a modest budget of $16 million, Black Phone became one of the highest-grossing horror movies right after the height of the COVID-19 pandemic.
“In the 20 years I’ve been doing this, it’s one of the most profitable movies the company’s ever had,” said Jason Blum, founder and CEO of production company Blumhouse Productions, in an interview with CNBC. Blum is the producer behind some of the most profitable films in the horror genre, such as the Insidious, The Purge, Paranormal Activity, and M3GAN franchises.
Black Phone 2 is set to arrive in Philippine cinemas on October 15.
