Magellan, the epic historical biopic by award-winning filmmaker and auteur Lav Diaz, is making its Philippine debut in cinemas. The internationally co-produced film, which made its world premiere at the 78th Cannes Film Festival earlier this year, will be screening in Ayala Malls Cinemas starting September 10.
Magellan chronicles the journey of the Portuguese explorer and arrival into the Philippines archipelago, with Ferdinand Magellan played by Mexican actor Gael García Bernal. Diaz stressed that the film, with its unflinching depiction of violence, is a historically accurate portrayal of Magellan’s attempt to colonize the country.
In an interview with Rolling Stone Philippines, actor Ronnie Lazaro, who plays Datu Rajah Humabon, or the King of Cebu, says Diaz’s version of Magellan sets it apart from current narratives surrounding the colonization of the Philippines. “Truth [is what sets it apart],” said Lazaro. “Lav’s version of Magellan is a well-researched movie that challenges our present knowledge.”
On August 26, the Film Academy of the Philippines (FAP) announced seven movies being shortlisted for the 98th Academy Awards’ Best International Feature Film category — among them being Magellan. Only one will be selected by the FAP’s selection committee for submission to the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences in the United States, which will hold the Oscars in March 2026.
