It looks like The Secret Agent will be hitting Philippine cinemas soon.
The Film Development Council of the Philippines (FDCP) recently shared a Facebook post of a still from the Golden Globe-winning film. “Some missions cannot be predicted,” read the caption. “Coming soon!”
The Secret Agent, directed by Kleber Mendonça Filho, centers on Marcelo (Moura), a technology expert on the run from mercenary killers. Set against the vibrant yet violent backdrop of Brazil in the late 70s, the film follows Marcelo as he does everything he can to escape the country with his young son.
The still bears an FDCP World Cinema watermark, indicating the film is part of a forthcoming second set of films in the FDCP program.
At the 2025 Cannes Film Festival, where it made its global premiere, The Secret Agent bagged the prestigious Fipresci Prize in the Official Selection – Competition category, given by the International Federation of Film Critics. Filho also won Best Director, and Moura won Best Actor, making him the first South American to do so.
Moura’s winning streak continued at this year’s Golden Globes, where he became the first Brazilian to win Best Actor in a Drama Film. The film also won the Best Motion Picture – Non-English Language category.
The Secret Agent has also been shortlisted for both the International Feature Film and Casting categories of the 98th Academy Awards.
The FDCP has already confirmed the lineup for the first set of its World Cinema program, which runs in select Philippine cinemas nationwide from January 26 to February 3. These four films are:
- Jafar Panahi’s Palme d’Or Winner, It Was Just an Accident
- Joachim Trier’s Golden Globe Best Motion Picture-Drama nominee and Grand Prix Winner, Sentimental Value,
- Germany’s Oscar entry, and Cannes Jury Prize winner, Mascha Schilinski’s The Sound of Falling, and
- Bi Gan’s Prix Special winner, Resurrection.
Participating cinemas include SM MOA, SM Megamall, SM Seaside (Cebu), SM Davao, and more. As of writing, the program’s screening schedules have not been announced. The FDCP has also confirmed a second set of World Cinema films, with updates set to be released after the first run.
