The first trailer for Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey has been released.
The acclaimed director recently debuted the latest look at his mythic blockbuster on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert. The Odyssey is set to follow Odysseus (Matt Damon), king of Ithaca, as he navigates dangerous seas to return home after the Trojan War.
The trailer features Damon as the hero lost at sea, while his wife and son — Penelope (Anne Hathaway) and Telemachus (Tom Holland) — attempt to keep the peace in their kingdom without a king. Robert Pattinson takes on a more sinister role as Antinous, one of Penelope’s many suitors, and it’s clear that he’s going to be one of this adaptation’s big bads. “You’re pining for a daddy you didn’t even know,” he sneers at Telemachus (a line which makes me wonder if Nolan took some liberties with Homer, but I digress). The epic will also be the first narrative film in history to be shot entirely with IMAX cameras.
The film’s stacked cast includes Zendaya as Athena and Charlize Theron as Circe, along with Lupita Nyong’o, Jon Bernthal, Benny Safdie, John Leguizamo, Himesh Patel, Will Yun Lee, Mia Goth, Jimmy Gonzales, Elliot Page, and Jovan Adepo.
The Odyssey releases on July 17 in the United States, but it won’t be the only blockbuster hitting cinemas that day. Spider-Man: Brand New Day will be released concurrently, setting up yet another double-feature ala “Barbenheimer” for Nolan.
