Celebrating its 15th anniversary this year, the coming-of-age comedy film Rakenrol follows close friends Odie (Jason Abalos) and Irene (Glaiza De Castro) and their fictional band Hapipaks trying to make it in the local music scene. The film featured several local bands that defined its era of music, from Pupil to Taken By Cars to Up Dharma Down. What happened to these bands? We take a look at seven acts and where they are today.
Eggboy
Diego Mapa’s solo project Eggboy co-wrote the lyrics to the film’s best-known song, “Oplan Pag-Ibig,” alongside Rakenrol co-writer Diego Castillo and Chicosci guitarist Mong Alcaraz. Eggboy has recently performed at live shows alongside TEETH, Janine Berdin, and Ely Buendia and the Methodists. Eggboy remains one of Mapa’s most celebrated musical projects alongside dance-punk band Pedicab and alternative rock supergroup Cambio.
Taken By Cars
“A Weeknight Memoir” by Taken By Cars plays in the film as Irene’s ringtone. The song comes from their 2008 debut album Endings of a New Kind. The band, composed of Sarah Marco, Bryce Zialcita, Siops Chua, Isa Garcia, and Bryan Kong celebrated its 15th anniversary in March 2023 but hasn’t played much since.
Peryodiko
Peryodiko was shown at the start of Rakenrol, performing at the now-defunct Mag:net Bar. Known for songs like “Agawan Base” and “Tayo Lang Ang May Alam,” the band’s vocalist Vin Dancel is now a full-time lawyer. Their self-titled 2009 album was later reissued on vinyl through Backspacer Records in 2021. Peryodiko had shifting members, with Vin as the only founding member. Their lineup has included his partner Kris Gorra-Dancel, Ristalle Bautista of Duster, Kakoy Legaspi of Barbie’s Cradle, Abe Billano of Dong Abay, and Simon Tan, all of whom are now pursuing their own musical projects.
Cambio
Cambio appears during one of the film’s happiest moments, specifically the scene where Odie and Irene bond together. The supergroup, composed of Eraserheads’ Raymund Marasigan and Buddy Zabala, Fatal Posporos’ Kris Gorra-Dancel, Diego Mapa, and Ebe Dancel, began in 2003 and eventually pursued their own separate paths in the music scene in 2007. Marasigan continued focusing on projects such as Sandwich, Squid 9, Basement Lung, Assembly Generals, and Party Pace, while Zabala went on to join The Dawn, Moonstar88, and Hilera in different years. Cambio later staged a couple of reunion sets at All of the Noise in November 2019 at Century City Mall, Makati City and Redlines Entertainment Productions’ GABOOM! in 2024 at 123Block, Mandaluyong City.
The Camerawalls
In one of the film’s montage sequences alongside Peryodiko and Sandwich, The Camerawalls are shown performing at another now-defunct venue, Route 196 in Katipunan, Quezon City. Vocalist and songwriter Clem Castro of Orange & Lemons formed The Camerawalls in 2007. Castro later reunited with Orange & Lemons and released its first album in 15 years, La Bulaqueña, in 2022.
Urbandub
Urbandub, appears in one of the film’s live music scenes performing “Runaway” from their 2003 album Influence. The band experienced lineup changes over the years, most notably with its drummers, before eventually returning with an expanded lineup in 2018. Urbandub remains one of the country’s most prominent rock acts, touring across North America, the United Kingdom, and Oceania. In April 2025, they celebrated their 25th anniversary alongside Typecast at the New Frontier Theater.
UDD
During a scene where Irene and Odie prepare to head to a party hosted by Jacci Rocha (Diether Ocampo), Up Dharma Down, now known as UDD, can be heard on the radio with their hit song “Oo” from their debut album Fragmented. Since then, frontwoman Armi Millare has departed the band, leaving UDD as a trio in 2021. Millare has since pursued a solo career, while the band continues exploring new material and directions of its own with singer Bea Lorenzo performing their songs live.
