Music icon Gary Valenciano is known to pour his heart out in every live performance. Last September 7, Valenciano called out the practice of taking an entire live set during a press conference promoting his upcoming concert series Back At The Museum. Valenciano said that it defeats the purpose of attending a concert. He has lamented that recording performances during a concert is unavoidable. However, he appealed to the audience not to record the entire show and upload it online.
“It takes away from the experience,” Valenciano says. “I mean you can upload portions but entire songs, concerts? I don’t think that’s good.”
Valenciano added that it takes a lot of effort to put up a concert and had past experiences of fans taking an entire video from his more recent shows in the U.S. He hopes to call out patrons at his upcoming concert if they attempt to record the entire duration of the concert.
“The thing is, I’m at the Music Museum, and I can see who’s recording. So, I can actually come up to the person and say, ‘Hey!’ So, I just don’t want to put people on the spot. But it really is the wrong thing to do.”
Musicians Weigh In on Full Concert Uploads
Last August 24, singer-songwriter Ice Seguerra also called out patrons who were taking footage of his concert Sessionistas: The Playlist on social media.
“When you buy a concert ticket, you’re buying the experience of watching the show,” Ice says. “You are not buying the right to record the whole thing and upload it to your own YouTube page or social media pages.”
More musicians have come out to urge fans to avoid taking full videos of concerts and uploading them online, such as singers Nina Girado, Top Suzara, and Thor Dulay, last September 6 during a press conference promoting their upcoming concert Nina XX this September 24 at the Newport Performing Arts Theater.
“There are people who saved their hard-earned money just to watch the show,” Nina says. “Snippets are fine because it would also promote our show. They are proud that they watched the show. Pero kawawa naman ‘yung nagbayad.”
