At the United Nations General Assembly last September 24, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu dismissed claims of Israel’s genocide in Gaza, saying that it is the “biggest lie of the century.” However, the UN walkouts, recent numbers, and newly updated satellite images of Google Maps beg to differ, with rubble filling in what used to be schools, hospitals, cafes, and popular destinations after continuous bombardments and extensive air strikes within the strip.
The imagery reveals the extent of the widespread destruction across Gaza, with entire residential blocks erased and other vast urban areas reduced to debris. The satellite images circulated on social media this week, though Google Earth did not specify the month of capture on its site.
The incessant destruction occurs despite a declared ceasefire in October 2025. Al Jazeera’s recent report shows that Israel violated the agreement at least 4,379 times from October 2025 to August 2026, citing the Government Media Office in Gaza. Over 1,000 Palestinians have also been detained since. In an August assessment by the UN Satellite Center (UNOSAT), an estimated 200,000 buildings, or about 82 percent of Gaza’s structures, have been damaged, if not destroyed. CBC News’ investigation also revealed that Israel cleared out some rubble from parts of their occupied territory to erase evidence of alleged war crimes. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) have countered and said this was a response to threats and attacks.
Aside from the land ruins, the humanitarian cost is more daunting. The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) documented that “inadequate shelter” and “limited access to safe water and sanitation” have made the transmission of communicable diseases (respiratory infections, acute watery diarrhea, and acute jaundice syndrome) easy in the strip while Palestinians continue to face starvation and dehydration. The death toll has passed over 74,000 — around 21,000 were children — according to Gaza’s Health Ministry.
Until now, there remains no lasting political resolution to the war between Gaza and Israel. If anything, “time is running out” for the proposed two-state solution, as said by UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres.
The two-state solution, based on lines introduced in the 1940s, is a proposed framework for resolving the conflict through establishing Israel and Palestine as two independent states, with secure and mutually recognized borders. The United Nations continues to identify it as the basis for a lasting political settlement, but Guterres has warned that Israel’s settlement expansion into the West Bank and displacement of Palestinians are making the creation of Palestine as a viable state difficult. The majority of Israelis (56 percent) and Palestinians (68 percent) are likewise pessimistic about the two-state idea, according to a survey from the Pew Research Center.
