Eric Dane, who starred as Dr. Mark Sloan on Grey’s Anatomy, has passed away. He was 53.
In a statement first shared with People, Dane’s family confirmed that the actor had died on the afternoon of February 19, following a year-long battle with amyotrophic lateral disease (ALS). “He spent his final days surrounded by dear friends, his devoted wife, and his two beautiful daughters, Billie and Georgia,” wrote Dane’s family.
Born in 1972, Dane spent the early years of his acting career landing roles on several television shows, such as Saved by the Bell, The Wonder Years, and Gideon’s Crossing. In 2006, Dane became a fan favorite for his steamy performance as Dr. Sloan in the second season of Grey’s Anatomy (he is, in fact, also known as McSteamy on the show). What started as a guest appearance turned into a regular role, and Dane stayed on the show until his departure in its ninth season.
Beyond Grey’s Anatomy, Dane also starred in the HBO hit drama series Euphoria, where he played Nate Jacob’s (Jacob Elordi) father, Cal. Dane has also starred in films such as X-Men: The Last Stand and Burlesque.
Last April, Dane announced his ALS diagnosis, a nervous system disease that causes loss of muscle control and worsens over time. By last June, Dane had lost function in his right arm but continued to act, even guest starring in an episode of the drama series Brilliant Minds.
“I’m not about to concede my purpose to some disease,” said Dane in a virtual panel with support organization, I Am ALS. “I think it’s imperative that I share my journey with as many people as I can, because I don’t feel like my life is about me anymore.”
