‘Supergirl’ Teaser Introduces DC’s Messy Party Girl Hero

A hungover 23-year old, Jason Momoa as a bounty hunter (and not Aquaman), and an interstellar revenge plot are just the start of what DC Studios teases in its latest Supergirl reveal

Supergirl is nothing like her bright-eyed, boy-scout cousin. We saw a glimpse of her at the end of Superman, where she makes her grand entrance crashing into the Fortress of Solitude to pick up her dog; however, we now get to see her in all her messy glory in the new teaser trailer of Supergirl.

DC Studios’ latest iteration of Kara Zor-El (played by Milly Alcock) takes a good chunk of inspiration from Tom King and Bilquis Evely’s  2022 comic book series, Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow. Best known for covering a darker chapter in her life, the comic presents us with a Supergirl that is still deeply traumatized by the loss of her entire planet. She’s alone, lost, and purposeless now that she’s realized that her baby cousin doesn’t need her to protect him.

Director Craig Gillespie’s take on the source material seems to be moving in the same direction, as suggested by the teaser opening with a hungover Kara trying to get out of bed (with her party girl sunglasses still on, of course). Krypto makes an appearance, playing Blondie’s “Call Me” on the record player before taking a well-aimed whiz on a copy of The Daily Planet, straight onto Superman’s smiling face.

From there, things get a little darker. Kara celebrates her 23rd birthday by drinking alone at a bar (she’s so real), before we shift to a childnamed Ruthye (Eve Ridley) turning to her to say, “I didn’t know any of you were still alive. What was it like to lose everything in a day?”

The teaser then gives us a few important flashbacks to the destruction of Krypton, and the chaos that is to follow after Kara and Ruthye cross paths. Just like the comic book series, Supergirl centers on the unlikely duo’s interstellar revenge road trip, as Kara helps the young girl hunt down the pirate Krem of the Yellow Hills (Matthias Schoenaerts).

One final reveal in this two-minute teaser also gives us our first look at Jason Momoa as the Czarnian bounty hunter Lobo. Although Momoa previously entered the DCU as Aquaman, he most likely won’t be stepping back into the role anytime soon, especially now that he’s playing an intergalactic mercenary.
