Andrea Brillantes plays Sabrina a.k.a. Sab, in writer and director Sigrid Andrea P. Bernardo’s latest drama thriller Laya, which hits Philippine theaters November 25.
Sab is a vengeful daughter who sets out to the island famed for whale shark sightings to exact revenge on her father’s killer: a recluse ex-con Tuki, played by JC Santos. Except her father’s killer is no longer the monster she’s painted him to be all these years.
Instead, in her quest, she meets a man shunned by his community for his appearance after being afflicted by a rare skin disease that made his skin resemble that of the town’s famous attractions — as his moniker cruelly suggests.
“In creating Laya, I wanted to tell a story about second chances and acceptance,” says Bernardo. “Tuki, who lives with Ichthyosis vulgaris, is like the whale shark — majestic yet often misunderstood, beautiful yet marked by the scars of his past. Just as the whale shark glides through the ocean, sometimes overlooked by those who can’t see beyond its surface, Tuki handles the turbulent waters of his life, carrying the weight of his history and the mistakes he has made.”
After encountering Tuki in his new life away from the jail cell and his checkered past, Sab must now make a decision: will she kill the man she believes was responsible for taking away her father’s life, or has seeing him in this new light softened her enough to forgive him?
