After a whole Hacks season of planning out Deborah’s return to the stage and doing everything to secure Madison Square Garden, still the big bad wins. Our girl gets Ja Rule-d. Bob Lipka pulled a 50 Cent on Deborah, except he didn’t just buy the front row as the rapper did in 2018 to humiliate his rival — he bought out the entire show. Despicable. Psycho. And really telling of just how rotten the American ticketing system is.
Back against the wall, Deborah rethinks her return. She pushes for a show in New York, but after seeing how her fans were left out, decides to do it for free at Central Park the same weekend. Delusional, I agree, Randi, but we’ve seen them go through lengths equally gruelling as this over five seasons. Thankfully, there’s a stage rigged at Central Park right at that moment. And guess who’s running that ship? And I need to add this to the growing list of loose ends Hacks is tying up on its last season: Weed. Yes, the same road tour freak that got Deborah through her multi-stop standup journey in Season 2. God bless, because that woman, however chaotic, can make things happen. And make it happen, she does after she gives the go signal for Deborah’s team to use the stage for the weekend.
Just one problem. It seems the Hacks’ New York City is yet to be run by Zohran Mamdani and as such, a park permit takes 30 days(!) to process. This season alone, Hacks has had plenty of breakout guests, from Cherry Jones and Leslie Bibb to Ann Dowd and Renee O‘Connor of Xena: Warrior Princess fame — and wait, because, again, it all loops back to this — but the latest appearance by comedian and podcaster Yamaneika Saunders as a hilarious NYC Department of Parks and Recreation employee is a home run. (“Boy, who are you?” and “She nosy” are up there in best ad libs). Apart from being in desperate need of a break, the Parks and Rec employee turns out to be a Xena fan who religiously listens to the rewatch podcast Jimmy and Kayla produces. And that solves the permit problem. Baby, Xenites unite indeed.
So really there’s just one thing left to do: tell people to go see Deborah Vance perform at Central Park. And again, this is where all the brilliant guest appearances pay off. Trisha Paytas from the Celebrity Amazing Race episode puts Deborah on a seafood mukbang episode. Even her short-time beau, Nico Hayes, gives her a plug on Instagram Live. The women of The View return on Hacks, too, as Deborah sat down to reconcile with Joy Behar. All of it worked and on the day of the Central Park free show, approximately 30,000 people show up on The Great Lawn, a record for stand-up in the park. Take that, Bob Lipka and MSG!
What Could Happen to Deborah Vance in the ‘Hacks’ Series Finale?
What’s not great? Hacks not beating they’re gonna k-word Deborah in the finale allegations with Ava bringing up the obituary opener again. As with any beloved series on its last stretch, fan theories are here for Hacks, including speculations about Deborah’s secret Beverly Hills doctor’s appointment. Did she show Ava an old work-up result? Didn’t her psychic say she saw a vision of Deborah looking like an angel? I mean, she’s old, but she’s not that old. In fact, we see her doing cardio as part of her preparation for the show at the beginning of the episode. That has to be good, right?
Anyway, for the time being, we have her, here in the middle of Central Park in her vintage white Bob Mackie telling us it’s stolen land but nonetheless, we’ve come to the right place.
Hacks is currently streaming its final season on HBO Max.
The show following her non-compete clause from leaving The Late Night Show, which barred her from performing for 18 months, is called “Gagged.”
Deborah Vance is supposed to perform to a sold-out audience at Madison Square Garden. After it turns out tickets were bought off by Bob Lipka, she decides to do the show for free at Central Park.
