Hajji Alejandro, the OPM icon best known for the classic Filipino anthems such as “Kay Ganda Ng Ating Musika,” “Nakapagtataka,” and “Panakip Butas,” has passed away at the age of 70 on April 22. The news was shared by Alejandro’s family in an official statement.

“It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of our beloved Dad and Son, Angelito ‘Hajji’ T. Alejandro,” the statement read. “At this time, we kindly ask for privacy as our family grieves this tremendous loss. We appreciate your understanding and support during this difficult time.”

Called affectionately as the “Kilabot ng mga Kolehiyala,” Hajji entered the national spotlight in the 1970s as a member of the Circus Band, where other OPM legends, including Tillie Moreno, Basil Valdez, Pat Castillo, and Jacqui Magno, first got their start.

Alejandro has given the OPM scene some of its most enduring ballads. Songs like “Tag-Araw, Tag-Ulan” and “May Minamahal” have resonated deeply with generations of listeners, becoming emotional touchstones for Filipinos around the world. In July 2019, the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA) recognized the impact of his music, lauding his iconic hit “Kay Ganda Ng Ating Musika” for its role in celebrating the rise of Filipino nationalism through song. The piece, the NCCA noted, “describes in metaphorical language the beautiful experience of discovering the gift of song.”

Hajji was diagnosed with advanced colon cancer earlier this year. The cancer had spread to his lungs and liver. Although the singer underwent immediate operation, he faced severe complications, including seizures and infection. He is survived by his three children: Rachel, Barni, and Ali.
