On February 19, seminal indie rock band Ang Bandang Shirley announced their split on social media after allegations of sexual misconduct, predatory behavior, and grooming against their lead guitarist Ean Aguila resurfaced. The band started in 2003 and released crowd favorites such as “Nakauwi Na,” “Tama Na Ang Drama,” and “Maginhawa,” among others.
A statement, signed by vocalist Debb Acebu, bassist Paolo Arciga, drummer Miggy Abesamis, and band manager Kathy Gener, said that the allegations have “significantly affected the band and the members.” The band also stated that they do not condone the actions Aguila committed throughout the years, urging him to take full responsibility.
Last January 15, Pauline Rana of dream pop band The Purest Blue spoke out on Instagram Stories against Aguila for grooming her into a relationship in 2013 when she was a minor and Aguila was twice her age. After detailing her experiences with Aguila, Rana pointed out how “the Philippine music scene is filled with predators,” stating that she did not want to give up music because her fellow female artists gave her a reason to fight for safer spaces.
“Hindi ako sumusuko pa sa music kase binubuhay ako ng lahat ng mga babae sa buhay ko at sa lahat ng makakasalamuha ko pa lang. Salamat sa pagtanggap ng bigat.” Rana said on Instagram Stories.

In response to the allegations, Aguila released a statement on Facebook last January 31, detailing his actions. In the post, Aguila said, “Facing past mistakes isn’t easy, but that’s not the point. This isn’t about what’s easy for me — it’s about accountability.”
The response was met with criticism from fans that Aguila should not have posted an empty statement, nor should he have stayed in the band knowing these allegations. The band took action by posting its February 19 statement on Facebook, mentioning that they “sincerely hope for the healing of all parties involved.” Ang Bandang Shirley ended their statement by collectively deciding to disband.
“This is the end for Ang Bandang Shirley,” the band then thanked all the support throughout the years,” their statement read.
