“This is our first time here and it definitely won’t be the last,” said SB19 member Josh as he and the rest of the Kings of P-Pop walked up the Allianz Stage at Lollapalooza on Friday, July 31 (PHST).
SB19’s first-ever Lolla set is nothing short of historic, not just for the group but for the country. After BINI’s Coachella debut in April, it was the boys’ turn to put on a show for the world to see. While fans at the festival cheered and waved Philippine flags for the pop group, A’TINs in the Philippines rose early in the morning to watch the hour-long performance on their screens and at watch parties. Pablo, Josh, Stell, Ken, and Justin did not disappoint.
The group started with “DAM” and “GENTO” to wake up the crowd. For the first time, SB19 also performed its new blues rock-inspired single “LAWLESS,” which was just released hours ahead of the Lollapalooza set. It was followed by another dance track, “Emoji,” before the group slowed things down with “MAPA” and “Wakas,” during which audiences waved their hands in unison.
SB19 went on to perform their unreleased cover of Francis M’s hip-hop anthem “Mga Kababayan,” which is part of the soundtrack of the highly anticipated DreamWorks Animated film Forgotten Island. From there, the five-piece was down to its last three songs.
They picked up the energy once more with “VISA,” before bringing out the Chicago Bulls mascot, Benny the Bull, for “DUNGKA!” And yes, Benny knew all the moves. SB19 finished their set with bouncy, synth-ridden “CRIMZONE,” which made for an explosive finale despite the minimal stage setup. As they left the stage, the boys said, “See you next year,” drawing more cheers from the audience.
It wasn’t just Filipino fans who made their way to the festival to see SB19. An ABC 7 Chicago broadcast featured American A’TINs from other states traveling to Chicago, Illinois to watch the homegrown Filipino act perform live. “We’re here to see SB19,” said one fan. “I’ve been a fan since 2021.” Aerial shots of the stage also showed a large crowd gathered at the stage and under the sun, braving the summer weather for the group.
For as long as the group has been around, SB19 has been working hard to put P-Pop on the map. “We are not just thinking about ourselves but also about how we represent P-pop and the Philippines on a global stage,” Pablo told Rolling Stone Philippines previously. And with fans showing up for them at Lollapalooza, watch parties, and home, it looks like the boy group has finally conquered the world.
