On December 19, DIY artist-run venue Sining Shelter and The Flying Lugaw are holding “Ating Bahay, Ating Shelter,” a fundraiser show for Sining Shelter’s repairs, at Apotheka in Poblacion, Makati.

In Parañaque City, an unassuming house stands on the corner of Sun Valley Drive next to the Barangay Hall. A white tarpaulin draped on its gate reads: “para sa mga baliw sa sining / Sining Shelter / a sound asylum for the peculiar and unusual”.

Formerly the childhood home of musician PK Shellboy, Sining Shelter is a venue for musicians and artists in the south of Metro Manila. Independently managed by a team of friends and volunteers, the venue has hosted all kinds of alternative and experimental shows, as well as international acts like Singapore’s Cayenne, Celine Autumn’s pop solo project, and Lealani from Los Angeles. Sharing the floor with more, the team also produces open mic shows for musicians to showcase their tunes.

After six major storms that devastated the Philippines in the last two months, Sining Shelter’s roof and ceiling were severely damaged, bringing it to a temporary close for the safety of patrons and artists.

To refit and eventually reopen Sining Shelter, “Ating Bahay, Ating Shelter” is the first of upcoming fundraising programs for the venue’s structural repairs and the maintenance of its gear and amenities.

Co-presented by The Flying Lugaw, Sining Shelter is bringing pieces of its space and community to a multi-genre show in Apotheka this December 19. The lineup features Cheeky Things, Fax Gang, Irrevocable, sci fye, Catboy Jeepney Drivers, and a “gang set” by LIAB Studios, along with DJ sets by PK Shellboy and Soft As Silk b2b Whiskey Sour.

Gig-goers can also look forward to browsing and shopping for clothes, anik-anik, and physical media from Sining Shelter’s previous fundraiser garage sales.

“We’ve always tried to make Sining Shelter a cozy place for artists, art enjoyers, and creatives to find sanctuary. We hope you’ll help us seek shelter ourselves,” Sining Shelter’s team writes in an Instagram post.

Doors open at 7 p.m. Tickets are available online via  bit.ly/abastickets.
