On January 10, the Malasimbo Music & Arts Festival — one of the Philippines’ most celebrated cultural events — announced its first line-up of artists for its 2025 edition.
After its last iteration in 2020 and a postponement last year, the highly anticipated return of the festival is set to take place on March 8 at the historic Puerta Real Gardens in Intramuros, Manila.
“The partnership with Intramuros Administration underscores Malasimbo’s commitment to celebrating Filipino heritage and promoting cultural tourism,” the press release said.
Malasimbo’s First Lineup of Artists
Among those announced in its initial lineup is legendary DJ, producer, and label boss of Wave Music, François K. As a pioneer of house music and staple in New York City’s club scene since the ‘70s, François K began his DJ career in institutions like Paradise Garage and Studio 54. As a producer, he has worked with artists like The Smiths, Kraftwerk, Pet Shop Boys, Depeche Mode, Diana Ross, and U2. He has also provided remixes for artists like Yoko Ono, Moloko, and Nina Simone.
Oahu-based musician Mike Love will also be returning to Malasimbo this year, having made his debut in 2020. Rooted in a style he describes as “revolutionary consciousness music,” Love’s lyricism is set against the backdrop of roots reggae, seamlessly combined with genres like progressive rock, soul, R&B, and blues, among others.
Other performers, including turntablist DJ Shortkut from San Francisco, and dance music collective Orange Juice Asia — consisting of DJs Marco Pedro, Shingen, and ManilaJunkie — are among those billed in Malasimbo’s initial announcement.
Founded in 2011, the Festival has celebrated the intersection of music, arts, and nature, offering a diverse range of performances and installations, as well as community engagement through environmental sustainability.
