Hemp Republic has been a mainstay of the Pinoy reggae scene for more than two decades., From playing together in live music institutions such as Timog Avenue’s Xaymaca during their ska and reggae nights, to performing at the diverse bills of España Boulevard’s Mayric’s Bar — even at Anonas Street’s favorite gig spot, Freedom Bar, it only feels right that Hemp Republic celebrates their 25th anniversary in another legendary Quezon City venue, Cubao’s very own The 70’s Bistro, on March 22.
Hemp Republic have been icons of the reggae genre and community since 2000,, providing lighthearted horns, catchy melodies and a sense of humor in tracks like “Sabihin Mo”, “Elbi Nights” and “Fireflies”. The sound of reggae has always welcomed listeners with its jubilant energy, and bands like Hemp Republic have lasted for over two decades because of their effective take on the genre.
“This is more than just an album launch — it’s a homecoming, a reunion, and a celebration of 25 years of music, friendship, and the Pinoy reggae movement,” explains Bunny Liwanag, the lead vocalist of the band. “The 25th anniversary show is a reflection of our journey, from our early days jamming in UP Los Baños to performing in international venues and concerts in Europe, to influencing a new wave of reggae artists across the country.”
Not only are they celebrating their legacy as a reggae band, but also on March 22 is the release of their brand new album called The Mighty People, featuring six new tracks, and a special treat for long-time reggae heads all over. “The album carries the spirit of our journey over the past 25 years — staying true to our roots while embracing new influences,” Liwanag says, “The six tracks in the album reflect themes of love, struggle, truth, and liberation, with our signature blend of reggae, rock, dub, and island vibes,”
