Trust ratings for President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. and Vice President Sara Duterte are on decline, nonprofit social research firm Social Weather Stations (SWS) says. Its January 2025 survey shows that public trust in Marcos is at 50 percent, while public trust in Duterte is at 49 percent.

Marcos’ regional ratings are highest in Luzon, where 60 percent of respondents said they have “much trust” in him. His trust ratings in Visayas and Mindanao are 44 percent and 37 percent respectively. On the other hand, Duterte enjoys a 78 percent trust rating from Mindanao, while his Visayas and Luzon ratings are 55 percent and 33 percent respectively.

Stratbase Consultancy, which commissioned the survey, attributes the decline in trust to public frustration over inflation. Stratbase President Victor Manhit said, “With the cost of essential goods continuing to rise, many Filipinos feel the administration’s efforts to ease the burden have been slow and insufficient.”

“To restore public confidence, the Marcos administration must double down on its responses by implementing long-term solutions to stabilize inflation and support struggling Filipino households,” Manhit added.

However, Facebook users have expressed doubts about the integrity of SWS and its survey. In a post sharing survey results, one Facebook user says, “Of course, SWS is a private institution. Pera-pera lang yan.”

Another Facebook user commented , “50 percent has icing on it. Without the icing, it’s gonna be 30 percent or less. No matter how questions are designed to favor BBM, it will still be a negative.”

Others shared that they resonate with the survey results, saying that the ratings are not surprising. Some also took the opportunity to call for Duterte’s impeachment and for Marcos to resign. A user from X (formerly Twitter) says, “Please for god’s sake let them go,” while another X user noted, “Baka dapat negative ratings ang lumabas na numero.”

SWS conducted its nationwide survey from January 17 to January 25, through face-to-face interviews with 300 respondents from Metro Manila, 900 from Luzon outside Metro Manila, 300 from Visayas, and 300 from Mindanao.

Marcos’ rating is a 14 percentage point drop from July 2024’s 64 percent. In the January 2025 survey, 26 percent of respondents said that they had “little trust” in the president, while 22 percent were undecided.

Duterte’s rating dropped by 16 percentage points from 65 percent in the July 2024 survey. 30 percent also said that they have “little trust” for the vice president, while 20 percent were undecided.
