Marvel has released the latest Avengers: Doomsday teaser online, and it looks like the returning X-Men are in serious trouble.
The teaser, which first released in cinemas before Avatar: Fire and Ash, opens with Xavier’s School for Gifted Youngsters in disarray. Hallways have been trashed and the school seems to be completely empty, save for two old friends: Charles Xavier (Sir Patrick Stewart) and Magneto (Ian McKellen) are busy playing a game of chess (because of course they are).
“Death comes for us all,” Magneto says in an ominous voice-over. “The question isn’t, ‘Are you prepared to die?’ The question is, ‘Who will you be when you close your eyes?’”
We quickly cut to Cyclops (James Marsden), donning a suit close to Jim Lee’s classic X-Men uniform, doubled over in pain as he shoots an optic blast into the sky. But it’s what looms behind him that has fans speculating what could be one of the main villains in Avengers: Doomsday: in the rubble, what appear to be the towering feet of Sentinels walk past the X-Man.
As classic X-Men villains in the comics, Sentinels were giant murderous robots created by the mutant-hating Dr. Bolivar Trask. Their presence in the latest teaser hints at a far more sombre blockbuster, and we’ll just have to see how the X-Men handle this foe on the big screen.
Besides Professor X, Magneto, and Cyclops, we’ll be seeing a few other familiar faces from the X-Men universe, including Gambit (Channing Tatum), Beast (Kelsey Grammer), Nightcrawler (Alan Cumming), and Mystique (Rebecca Romijn).
A fourth teaser, currently screening in cinemas, reportedly features the return of The Fantastic Four and several characters from Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.
Avengers: Doomsday is scheduled to hit cinemas on December 18, 2026.
