Your favorite kaiju is coming back soon. On Monday, November 3, Japanese film company Toho Studios announced Godzilla Minus Zero (styled as Godzilla -0.0), the sequel to the 2023 action film Godzilla Minus One. Writer and director Takashi Yamazaki is slated to lead the return of the reptilian monster to cinemas.
The announcement was made at this year’s Godzilla Day in Tokyo, Japan. Yamazaki, who will once again act as VFX supervisor, also drew the upcoming movie’s teaser artwork.
The Hollywood Reporter reports that the filmmakers want to set Godzilla Minus Zero for release in late 2026 as production continues in Norway and New Zealand.
Yamazaki also wrote and directed Godzilla Minus One. With a reported budget of around $15 million, the monster flick would go on to earn $116 million at the box office and win Best Visual Effects at the 96th Academy Awards.
There are currently 38 movies in the entire Godzilla franchise. The series, recognized by the Guinness World Records as the longest continuously running film series, started in 1954 with Ishirō Honda’s Godzilla. All projects since then have spanned different historical eras in Japan and branched out with American co-productions.
