The sequel to KPop Demon Hunters is in the works.
Since debuting on Netflix in June 2025, the surprise animated hit has only continued to skyrocket in popularity. To date, KPop Demon Hunters has reached more than 500 million views on the streaming platform, making it Netflix’s most popular film of all time. Its single “Golden” became the first K-pop track to win a Grammy, and its five-week stint atop the Billboard Hot 100 made it the longest-running top song by an animated act in the chart’s history. And it’s up for two Oscar nominations this year.
As of writing, Netflix has yet to announce a release date for the sequel. However, we do know that Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans are returning to direct their continuation of the HUNTR/X saga.
Kang and Appelhans have also entered an exclusive, multiyear writing and directing partnership with Netflix across animation, so it’s safe to say that we’ll be seeing more of their projects on the platform in the near future.
“I feel immense pride as a Korean filmmaker that the audience wants more from this Korean story and our Korean characters,” said Kang in Netflix’s official announcement of the sequel. “There’s so much more to this world we have built, and I’m excited to show you. This is only the beginning.”
“These characters are like family to us,” said Appelhans, “their world has become our second home. We’re excited to write their next chapter, challenge them, and watch them evolve — and continue pushing the boundaries of how music, animation, and story can come together.”
