KPop Demon Hunters is now officially (Oscar) golden.
On March 16 (Philippine Time), the 98th Academy Awards took place at the Dolby Theater in Los Angeles. Netflix’s most popular film of all time took home the Oscar for Best Animated Feature, beating nominees Elio, Arco, Little Amélie or The Character of Rain, and Zootopia 2.
Directors Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans walked the stage and accepted the award. Kang dedicated her speech to speak directly to the Korean fans and viewers of KPop Demon Hunters.
“I’m so sorry it took us so long to see us in a movie like this,” said Kang. “This is for Korea and for Koreans everywhere.”
In 2020, South Korea made history at the Academy Awards when director Bong Joon-Ho’s Parasite was named Best Picture, becoming the first non-English language film to take home the prize.
“Music and stories have the power to connect us as humans across borders,” said Appelhans. “Tell your story, sing in your voice — I promise the world is waiting.”
