For someone who’s titled her third album you seem pretty sad for a girl so in love, Olivia Rodrigo looks pretty happy in her latest single’s music video, “Drop Dead.”
Directed by Petra Collins (who also directed Rodrigo’s past videos, including “brutal” and “bad idea right?”), “Drop Dead” features the pop-punk princess stalking her latest flame on the internet while dancing around the Palace of Versailles. It’s definitely a reference to the song’s lyrics — “All pressed up in the bathroom line/ you’re looking like an angel on the walls of Versailles” — but isn’t this also what it feels like to scroll through your crush’s socials? I digress.
The new single feels like a stark departure from Rodrigo’s previous tracks, many of which tended to lean towards an angrier and more heartbroken side to her. “Drop Dead” is undeniably dreamy, with the pop star mixing fluttery synths and lyrics about loving a boy so much that she might throw up (“Left hook, right punch to the gut,” she coos while she tiptoes through the palace grand hall with her headphones on).
Over the past few weeks, Rodrigo’s been dropping several hints about “Drop Dead” on Instagram, posting snippets of its lyrics on Reels. The single comes months ahead of the release of you seem pretty sad for a girl so in love, which is set to arrive on June 12. “I am so proud of this record and I can’t wait for you to hear it,” Rodrigo wrote on Instagram.
Although Rodrigo has yet to release any tour dates or any other hints about the upcoming album, she is set to work double duty on Saturday Night Live later this May. Here’s hoping that she makes sure to add a homecoming stop in the Philippines just like she did back in 2024.
