It was only a matter of time before the Pax Silica debate made its way into more corners of society. BINI member Mikha Lim is among the latest Filipinos with a big platform to weigh in, sharing her concerns and raising questions about the impact of the U.S.-led AI industrial hub on the Philippines.
In a Weverse livestream on August 15, the artist addressed the project and questioned whether its promised economic benefits would outweigh the potential costs to the country’s natural resources and communities. The AI hub is expected to rely mostly on the country’s semiconductors and other “untapped” materials for electrical components.
“Is it worth it losing the minerals that make the Philippines, the Philippines? Tataas ‘yung cost of living, so what’s the difference? Bibigyan ng jobs, pero tataas ‘yung cost of living. How does that help with the poverty?” she said.
Lim also zeroed in on the project’s demand for water and mentioned the need to support Filipino farmers. Water that would be used for the industrial development is also water needed by farms and communities. “Nakita niyo ba ‘yung tubig sa U.S.? Ang dumi na. Imagine, that’s happening in a very big country. What more in our country?” Lim said.
“The amount of clean water they need is also enormous. Support the farmers, guys. Jusko! We would not survive without them,” she added.
Lim further urged everyone to use their voices to discuss what matters and what is currently happening. Videos of her speaking up have since made the rounds online, both within the Blooms fanbase and reaching audiences beyond it, earning split reactions.
Pax Silica, after all, is not simply a conversation about semiconductors, artificial intelligence, or the Philippines’ place in a rapidly changing global economy. It is also about the land, minerals, water, energy, jobs, and who ultimately gets to benefit from the country’s resources, which is why the government should not confine discussions about the hub to itself alone. Lim’s comments prove that we are all part of this issue and why it’s important to speak up.
Celebrities and artists do not need to be policy experts to ask questions, demand transparency, or encourage their audiences to pay attention. Their role is not to provide the definitive answer, but to make sure more people know they can also add to the discussion.
