Laura Dern is leading the cast of the satirical comedy-drama The White Lotus, after Helena Bonham Carter’s exit from the show was announced last week. With the recast, Dern reunites with writer and director Mike White, who also directed her in the 2011 TV series Enlightened and the 2007 film Year of the Dog.
The Jurassic Park actress previously lent her voice to the character Abby Di Grasso in an uncredited cameo on The White Lotus Season 2. This time, she joins the stacked cast of the hit show’s fourth season, which currently includes Vincent Cassel, Steve Coogan, Ari Graynor, Alexander Ludwig, Chris Messina, AJ Michalka, Kumail Nanjiani, Chloe Bennet, and Max Greenfield.
In previous seasons, the show was set in Hawaii, Italy, and Thailand. Season 4 takes place in France during the Cannes Film Festival, but the roles remain unrevealed as of this writing.
According to an HBO spokesperson, Carter had left the show just as production began, as “the character which Mike White created for Helena Bonham Carter did not align once on set.” The spokesperson furthermore told Deadline on April 24 that the British actress’ role “has subsequently been rethought, is being rewritten, and will be recast in the coming weeks.” It did not take long for White to find a new lead in Dern.
Dern has received awards and nominations for her performances in other comedy-drama shows, including Enlightened, Apple TV’s Palm Royale, and HBO’s Big Little Lies. She also won an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress in 2020 for her role as lawyer Nora Fanshaw in Noah Baumbach’s Marriage Story.
