Singer and musician Bing Austria has died at the age of 62. His family announced on social media that he passed away due to sepsis. Austria was rushed to the ICU of a private hospital on May 30, when his family also launched a donation drive to help cover medical expenses.
His family announced a benefit show set for June 16 at The ‘70s Bistro. The lineup includes punk band Betrayed, reggae singer Jeck Pilpil, dub band Goodleaf, reggae band Tropical Depression, and many more artists performing in support of covering medical expenses for Austria.
Austria was a prolific soul, ska, and reggae musician best known for playing piano and organ for Tropical Depression beginning in 1989. He later joined several notable acts, including ska band PU3SKA in 1993, known for the ska cover of Urban Bandits’ “Manila Girl” released in 1995. He then joined mod band Juan Pablo Dream in 2003, where he sang on tracks such as “Nice Place.” He would eventually go on to form his own band, Flippin’ Soul Stompers. In May 2025, Austria and Juan Pablo Dream released the band’s latest album When We Were Kids under Eikon Records. His contributions across reggae, ska, and soul made him a familiar presence in the local music community for decades.
