Rap collective Morobeats took home their first-ever trophy at the inaugural Filipino Music Awards, winning Hip-Hop Song of the Year for “Gubat na Siyudad.”

The ceremony, held on October 21 at the SM Mall of Asia Arena, recognized some of the country’s biggest musicians. Upon receiving the award, GMac tells the crowd “Maraming salamat sa diyos, sa mga local artists, at sa mga tunay na nakikinig samin.” Meanwhile, DJ Medmessiah thanked the audience and said, “Gusto ko lang sabihin na wag kayong matakot na gawin ng makabuluhang musika! Free Palestine!” before they all collectively went off stage.

Morobeats’ win marked a defining moment for hip-hop, showcasing how the genre continues to balance technical skill with raw, socially aware storytelling. Written and performed by Morobeats members Kambal and GMac, and produced by the group’s founder DJ Medmessiah, “Gubat na Siyudad” blends sharp lyricism with a pulsing mix of synths and boombap drums. The production’s classic feel heightens the verses’ gritty atmosphere, as Kambal and GMac detail the struggle of urban survival and the realities of life in the city. It’s a portrait of modern Filipino life painted through a distinctly underground lens, where every beat is rooted in lived experience.

Other nominees in the category included Hellmerry’s “My Day” under Young God Records, Robledo Timido’s “Gusto Ko Sakin Lamang,” Waiian’s “Man in the Mirror,” and the remix of “SUBOMOTO” by Hev Abi and Zae. MoroBeats’ victory stands as a reminder that hip-hop in the Philippines remains a powerful voice for truth, resilience, and the complexities of daily life.
