Grammy-winning R&B singer SZA has been appointed Artistic Director of global footwear brand Vans, the company announced on August 15. The move follows the conclusion of her Grand National Tour, where she co-headlined with rapper Kendrick Lamar, wrapping in Stockholm, Sweden, on August 9.
SZA, known for hits including “luther,” “Kill Bill,” and “Good Days,” brings a fresh perspective to a brand long associated with skateboarding and street culture. Since 1966 and hailing from Anaheim, California, Vans has built its reputation on embracing diverse subcultures, including punk, streetwear, and action sports.
Her appointment signals Vans’ interest in expanding its creative vision beyond its skate roots, blending the brand’s heritage with SZA’s influence in contemporary R&B and popular culture. It also reflects how music and fashion continue to intersect, shaping new communities and cultural narratives. Now with SZA at the helm, Vans positions itself to connect with a wider audience while honoring its subcultural legacy.
“In Vans, I feel free!” SZA said in a press statement. “I’ve been wearing Knu Skools and other styles for years. They’ve always had an ethos I connect with. As Artistic Director, my mission is to show that joy, community, creativity, and fashion are all still intersectional. That humanity, culture, and connection are still the access points.”
While this marks her most prominent role in fashion to date, SZA has previously explored the industry through collaborations. She appeared in a Tommy Hilfiger campaign and released her own Crocs collection, both of which reflected her eclectic style and broad cultural reach.
