SteelHeart, the rock band behind hits “She’s Gone” and “I’ll Never Let You Go,” had long planned to record a cover of British power pop band Badfinger’s iconic single “Without You.” The song, made even more popular by contemporary R&B legend Mariah Carey in 1996, was a classic anthem that became a global phenomenon sweeping charts all over the world. Now, about three decades later, SteelHeart has finally decided to release its own rendition of “Without You” for a new generation of listeners.
Frontman Miljenko Matijević recorded the song around the same time as Carey in 1996, and he says the cover is his best vocal performance to date. “30 years ago I recorded ‘Without You,’ so did Mariah Carey,” Matijević said on Instagram. “She’s a little bigger than me, so I waited. 30 years later. It’s my turn.”
The latest version features Matijević’s powerful vocals backed by a string section. The release follows the band’s SteelHeart 30 campaign, celebrating three decades since its self-titled debut album, which was released in 1990. The cover also comes with an official music video set to premiere on July 16.
