Nora Aunor, the country’s late Superstar and arguably the ultimate Mother of Philippine cinema, takes center stage on Cinema One this Mother’s Day as the local television channel kicks off its month-long tribute to the National Artist for Film and Broadcast Arts. Starting on Mother’s Day, the channel will showcase one of Nora Aunor’s classic films every Sunday for the month of May at 10:00 p.m.
For those looking to reignite their love for the Superstar or for those who want to discover her for the first time, this is for you. May 11 sees Cinema One air the 1976 drama Minsa’y Isang Gamu-gamo, where Aunor plays a nurse torn over emigrating to the United States after her brother is killed by an American soldier. On May 18, viewers can tune in to watch Bulaklak sa City Jail, which sees Aunor playing a pregnant woman arrested for attempted murder. Finally, on May 25, Cinema One will present Himala, showcasing Aunor’s iconic role as a woman claiming she possesses miraculous powers.

The three films show what made Aunor not only a star in showbusiness but a true Filipina icon. “Rebelde si Guy,” National Artist Ricky Lee said in a heartfelt eulogy, paying tribute to the late star’s legacy. “Sa loob ng pitong dekada ay nilabanan niya ang status quo. Binago niya ang kolonyal na pagtinging nagsasabing mga mapuputi lang at matatangkad ang maganda sa puting tabing. Ginampanan niya ang papel ng mga babaeng palaban at makatotohanan.”
In addition to spotlighting Aunor’s timeless performances, Cinema One will showcase films from other iconic mothers of Philippine entertainment, including Sharon Cuneta’s Madrasta on May 11, Angel Locsin’s One More Try on May 18, and Vilma Santos and Claudine Barretto’s Anak on May 25, all starting at 3:00 p.m.
Along with screening these classics on its cable channel, Cinema One also provides free access to dozens of Filipino movies on its YouTube channel, including Hindi Nahahati Ang Langit, Ina Ka ng Anak Mo, and My Funny Valentine.
