Japanese-American singer-songwriter Mitski will release her first concert film, Mitski: The Land, in theaters worldwide on October 22. The film was directed by Grant James, known for his work with country musicians Father John Misty and Jonathan Wilson, and captures Mitski’s three-night run in 2024 at the Fox Theatre in Atlanta, Georgia. The shows followed the release of her 2023 album The Land Is Inhospitable and So Are We, which cemented her reputation for crafting music that moves between intimacy and spectacle from her wide musical discography.

The film showcases Mitski’s renowned stage presence, often described as magnetic for its intensity and intense emotion. Her performances rely on sharp, deliberate choreography, sparse stage setups, and an almost theatrical use of light to draw focus to her movements. She has also been vocal about her stance on live music culture, most notably in 2022 when she asked audiences to avoid using phones during her shows — a decision that sparked widespread conversation about how fans experience concerts.

Mitski has a devoted following in the Philippines, with yearly cover nights dedicated to her music in venues like Sining Shelter in Parañaque City, and Kashmir in Poblacion, Makati. The concert film reflects her long-spanning catalog, which ranges from the raw indie rock of Bury Me at Makeout Creek and its fan favorites “Francis Forever” and “First Love / Late Spring,” to the piano-driven Be the Cowboy and the country-tinged Laurel Hell. The concert film features a seven-piece band, choreography by Monica Mirabile, stage design by Andi Watson, and mixing by Mitski’s longtime collaborator Patrick Hyland. Mitski: The Land will be shown in selected theaters in North America, with no dates for a Philippine release as of the time of writing.
