Karl Urban didn’t have the easiest time getting ready for his starring role in Mortal Kombat II.
The New Zealand actor, best known for his roles in action-packed projects such as The Boys, The Lord of the Rings, and Thor: Ragnarok, spoke candidly about training to play Johnny Cage in Mortal Kombat II. Staying true to the classic video game the movie is based on, Johnny is a washed-up Hollywood star who must use his fighting skills to defeat the dark rule of Shao Kahn (Martyn Ford) and save the Earthrealm.
“It was hands-down the most challenging physical undertaking that I’ve ever embarked on,” Urban said in a global press conference promoting the film. “The skill set required was definitely an exponential learning curve that I never encountered, and I certainly would be lying if I didn’t say I wasn’t a little bit terrified. I mean, you’re stepping into a movie with martial artists who are so accomplished.”
“I remember landing in Brisbane,” added the actor, “and getting driven straight to a stunt rehearsal session. Like I still had my bags and they were like, ‘Here we go!’”
However, Urban emphasized how important it was for him and the rest of the ensemble cast to work on their fighting skills. “I think we really recognized the importance of getting it right,” he said. “This is a film that has been made by fans, and I think all of the cast felt the responsibility of that, [so we] invested a significant amount of time and energy into training. We’re supremely delighted with the end result.”
Mortal Kombat II is currently screening in Philippine cinemas.
