Phoebe Bridgers, NCT 127, Weezer, and All the New Albums You Need To Hear This August

The month of August is stacked with new music from both up-and-coming artists and longtime favorites alike.  After more than six years since the release of Punisher, alternative folk singer-songwriter Phoebe Bridgers returns to break more hearts with Lost Weekend, while Los Angeles’ Weezer are back at it again with another color-themed album. Alongside the two are more albums worth waiting for this month’s releases to keep on your radar this August.

FLO, ‘Therapy at the Club’

FLO’s Stella Quaresma, Jorja Douglas, and Renée Downer may be onto something with the title of their sophomore album, Therapy at the Club. The trio has delivered an array of underrated bops over the past couple of years. On the brand new album, releasing on August 7, FLO promises a peek of the group’s more delicate moments as they navigate themselves through the current pop scene. 

Phoebe Bridgers, ‘Lost Weekend’

For over two years, Phoebe Bridgers has remained completely quiet following the release of boygenius’ debut album the record in 2023. But all of that is set to change come August 14 with the release of her latest album, Lost Weekend. Bridgers has largely stayed out of the public eye, only returning for a handful of arena shows with one important rule: no phones allowed. With no real evidence making it out online, fans have spent months speculating what the new album will sound like, let alone what it will be about. The first single, “Lost Boys,” gave audiences a taste of what’s to come and teasers of who’s who of indie darlings being part of the new album suggest that we might be getting one of the best albums of the year. 

Silica Gel, ‘Ballad of You’ 

South Korea’s indie scene couldn’t be prouder of Silica Gel. Blending psychedelic rock, electronic textures, shoegaze, and art rock into something entirely its own, the Seoul quartet has become one of the country’s most adventurous live bands. Ballad of You, out August 20, comes after three years since the release of POWER ANDRE 99. They’ve also worked steadily on expanding their signature sound through standalone singles and festival appearances across Asia. If the band’s recent output, from the visceral “NamgungFEFERE” to the genre-mashing lead single “Molecular Gastronomy,” is anything to go by, the album should continue its unpredictable mix of towering guitars, warped electronics, and emotionally charged songwriting. It’s easily one of the most anticipated Korean indie releases of the year.

Weezer, Gold Album

Weezer just can’t seem to stop adding colors to its catalog. The band has become widely known for the colors of several of their self-titled albums, including the Blue album (1994), Green album (2001), Red album (2008), White album (2016), Black album (2019), and Teal album (2019). Rivers Cuomo and company return with the Gold album, another release that continues one of alternative rock’s longest-running gimmicks. Whether it leans toward the band’s trademark crunchy power pop or its more oddball garage rock records remains to be seen, but that’s always been part of Weezer’s appeal. For longtime fans, the Gold album is another excuse to see where the band wanders next this coming August 21.

NCT 127, ‘Blingy’

K-pop sub-unit NCT 127 has consistently pushed the envelope in terms of their sound, bouncing between abrasive hip-hop, glossy R&B, and some of K-pop’s most left-field production choices. Take “Sticker” and “Cherry Bomb,” for example. Coming out August 24, Blingy celebrates the group’s 10th anniversary. Even after core members Winwin and Mark left the group, NCT 127 isn’t showing signs of slowing down. For NCTzens, Blingy signals another important chapter for one of SM Entertainment’s homegrown acts as it enters a new phase.
