Fresh off his acclaimed performance in last year’s Metro Manila Film Festival (MMFF) entryThe Kingdom, actor Dylan Menor makes a compelling case for artistic reinvention with his musical debut, the harana pop single “Maghapon.” The track marks Menor’s transition into the lineage of Filipino actors-turned-crooners, joining the ranks of Elijah Canlas, Ian Veneracion, and Dennis Trillo, who’ve successfully bridged screen and studio over the decades.

“Maghapon” distilled harana’s essence — from its romantic vulnerability to its lyrical devotion — into a contemporary framework. Menor, often typecast as a heartthrob in dramatic roles, leans into his strengths here: his voice carries the weight of whispered confessions as if serenading through a bedroom window rather than a concert hall. The magic lies in his delivery, startlingly assured for a debut, as though he’s been singing these melodies for years.

SunKissed Lola vocalist Alvin Serito co-pilots the production, blending harana’s acoustic intimacy with pop’s melodic hooks. Gentle guitar plucks mirror Menor’s tender phrasing, while piano crescendos elevate the track beyond nostalgia into something timeless. It’s a careful balancing act: honoring tradition  while allowing Menor’s star power to refract it through a modern lens.

Harana pop has always been less about rigid formulas and more about emotional transmission — the ability to make listeners feel the ache, the longing, the flutter of infatuation. Popular examples such as Jireh Lim’s “Buko,” Eliza Maturan’s “Museo,” and geiko’s “sol at luna” have tested this formula with effective results. With “Maghapon,” Menor proves he understands that alchemy. As the song builds to its climax, each note feels like a step closer to a lover’s doorstep.
