Megumi Acorda’s ‘Sun Blanket’ EP is an Intimate, Fuzzed-Out Return

Dream pop singer-songwriter Megumi Acorda returns with Sun Blanket, her newest EP featuring four new tracks that lean further into a fuzzier, more guitar-driven sound. The release, which dropped at midnight on October 13, marks a slight shift from the ethereal, reverb-heavy dream pop she’s best known for. “Puro gritty guitar pop songs lang siya,” Acorda wrote on Instagram, jokingly referring to the project as “grit pop.”

Dedicated to her cats and the “cat-like people” in her life, Sun Blanket carries a sense of warmth and quiet companionship beneath its haze of distortion. The EP offers glimpses of the tenderness and melancholy that have defined her songwriting since her debut. Earlier this year, Acorda performed Sun Blanket track “Copeland Heights” live in Bacolod back in February and later brought her music to Mongolia’s Playtime Music Festival in July, sharing the stage with Japanese screamo band Envy and South Korean collective Balming Tiger — a testament to her growing international presence.

Since releasing her first EP Unexpectedly in 2018 and her acclaimed debut album Silver Fairy in 2023, Acorda has built a reputation for crafting deeply emotional dream pop anchored by introspection and sonic texture. With Sun Blanket, she proves that her universe can still expand, becoming fuzzier, louder, and even more intimate than before.
