R&B’s reigning viral king Dionela, the smooth-voiced architect behind hits like “Marilag” and “sining,” just executed one of the most brilliant bait-and-switch schemes in recent OPM history. What began as apparent cringe-worthy lyricism turned out to be an elaborate setup for his most ambitious collaboration yet: a track with rap legend Loonie from the upcoming single, “Ikigai.” The announcement came about months after releasing his most streamed single “Marilag” since November last year.

On March 20, Dionela posted a photo of handwritten lyrics on Facebook featuring the lines: “Nais kitang dalhin sa lugar na kung saan tayo lang / Basahin sa’yo ang mga lihim ni Andres kay Oriang.” The internet immediately erupted. Critics pounced on the “try hard” Tagalog, with one user sneering, “Dinamay pa sina Andres at Oriang,” while others simply reacted with baffled “The fuck is going on?” comments. The disjointed phrasing seemed uncharacteristic for Dionela, and that was exactly the point.

For 48 hours, Dionela stoked the flames. He followed up with a popcorn emoji. Fans and detractors alike piled on, debating whether this was a misfire or something more calculated. Then, on March 22, the mic drop: Those weren’t his lyrics, they were Loonie’s. The reveal sent shockwaves through Dionela’s fanbase. Some praised the trolling as genius marketing; others groaned at being played. “It’s a trap,” Dionela teased, implying the collaboration and the rollout will defy expectations. By letting fans clown what turned out to be Loonie’s writing, Dionela flipped the script on knee-jerk online criticism. Now, the question is how deep the rabbit hole goes.

With “Ikigai” on the horizon and a North American tour kicking off in June, Dionela’s proving he’s a master of the game. In the age of viral marketing, Dionela just schooled everyone how to turn doubt into hype.
